A TV Reality Star Gives His Pets the Boot

FOX News reports in the article Jon Gosselin Sends His Dogs Back to Breeder, Blames Wife, that reality star Jon Gosselin, from the TLC show “Jon and Kate Plus Ei8ht,” is getting rid of his two German Shepherds: Shoka and Nola.

The article also points out how Gosselin had to release a statement earlier in the summer to clear up rumors of animal abuse. In his statement, he is quoted saying, “Shoka and Nola are loyal companions who we consider members of our family.”

If Gosselin considers Shoka and Nola his family, then why is he throwing them away?

Unfortunately, Katie Flory and Becca Rose, 2 interviewees of mine, say that situations such as this one happen all the time. People find that they can’t take care of their pats any longer – or that they just don’t want to take care of them anymore. Like Flory says, “can’t keep” really just means “I don’t want the animal anymore.”

Although Gosselin blames his wife Kate (the 2 are currently separated) for not being able to keep his dogs, we don’t know for certain Jon’s reasons for throwing away his pets. We just know he is.

Situations similar to the Gosselins, involving moving and divorce are common reasons people choose, or feel they have to give up their pets. But this problem doesn’t go unnoticed. Many animal shelters are extremely overcrowded with animals that are no longer wanted by their previous owners.

And although Jon is sending Shoka and Nola back to the breeder and not an animal shelter, he is still adding two more dogs to the list of thrown away pets.

Wow, this is quite a story. It is crazy that people will just “give away” their pets like that. I think this is a good article to point out, people relate well to celebrities and this is a great way to further prove your point. I like how you related your interviewees to the article and asked their opinions on what the article was about. It adds more dimension and flavor to just a reaction to an article. I have a few ideas of shelters around my area that would be good to talk to if you are interested.

I love this article because it shows a different aspect (the celebrity side) to the whole giving pets away problem. Celebrities have a huge influence on people and are many times considered role models so for a celebrity to do something cruel to animals shows a lot about their character. This article seemed more gossip based though than informative but that could be a cool side to your blog. How celebrities treat animals. I enjoyed it!
